2-Dimensional Art Foundations is a beginning level course that provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of 2-Dimensional art as well as an understanding of aesthetics, art criticism, and art history. The students will work with the basic art elements and principles of design while concentrating on 2-Dimensional art forms such as drawing, design, and painting. A variety of media will be incorporated throughout the course.
2-D Art Foundations satisfies the prerequisite requirements for: Adv. Drawing I, Adv. Painting I, Adv. Photography I, Adv. Printmaking, and Adv. Applied Design. This course has a $5.00 art fee.
You are lucky to be in this class!! 2-D Art Foundations is one of the most enjoyable and useful courses offered here at MHS. You’ll be surprised at how much of what we learn and do in this course relates to your other classes, future art-related careers, and life in general.
Classroom Expectations: - ZERO! Tolerance for bullying, inappropriate behavior, and/or language.
- You will be treated with the utmost respect and I expect the same from you towards me and any other person in the room.
- In my room we are a community of artists, we are here to open our minds to new ideas and challenges. I do not expect you to know everything about art nor do I expect you to know how to make everything. The expectation is for you to have a growth-mindset (KEEP TRYING) and don’t give up on yourself. I will not give up on you!
- You are responsible for your supplies and the area you choose to use them in.
- You are expected to clean up after yourself and leave the room neat and tidy.
- Help one another out! For example: If you are done cleaning up, help someone else clean up!
- Any student that prohibits the teaching and learning process will be dealt with according to the discipline section of the Mehlville High School Handbook.
- You are to remain seated or standing behind your chair at your desk until the bell rings each day, not at the door!
In order to Succeed!!!:- Put forth your greatest effort every day.
- Tell the teacher if you are having a hard time focusing on doing your best work.
- Take care of your assignments and materials.
- Make sure that assignments are clean and presentable for evaluation.
- Turn your assignments in on time.
- A thoughtfully completed reflection and self evaluation sheet should accompany each of your assignments.
Things you need for class: A .5” binder, lined/ruled paper, pencils, eraser, a black extra fine and fine point sharpie, and a growth mindset.
Course Objectives:
1. The student will complete a series of value drawings in a variety of media that demonstrate 80% competency in the use of line, value, perspective and proportion according to an art scoring guide. (FA1, FA2, FA3; 1.6, 2.5, 3.1)
2. The student will demonstrate knowledge of color theory as assessed by a written critique that reveals 80% proficiency according to a scoring guide. (FA2, FA3; 2.5) (A+: Writing)
3. The student will complete a color study that demonstrates 80% proficiency in painting techniques and color mixing as determined by a scoring guide. (FA1, FA2; 2.1, 2.5, 4.5) (A+: Research)
4. The student will produce a graphic design applying the elements and principles of art that demonstrates 80% proficiency as determined by a scoring guide and oral critique. (FA1, FA2,; 1.6, 2.5, 3.1) (A+: Speaking)
5. The student will demonstrate 80% competency in the use of printing tools and materials and successful execution of the printing process according to a scoring guide. (FA1, FA3, MA1; 2.1, 2.5, 3.2)
6. The student will demonstrate knowledge of aesthetics, art criticism and art history obtained through various resources through written assignments that reveal 80% competency as determined by a scoring guide. (CA4, CA6, CA5, FA3; 2.1, 2.3) (A+: Reading)

- Elements: Line, Shape, Value, Texture, Color, Form, Space
- Principles: balance, Emphasis, Movement, Rhythm, Contrast, Pattern, Unity
- Two- Dimensional Art;
- Design: Composition, Focal Areas, Balance, Emphasis, Unity
- Drawing: Contour, Perspective, Value Scales, Shading Basic Forms, Value, Study
- Painting: Color Theory, Color Mixing, Color impact
- Printing: Stamp prints-pattern, mono-prints, or reduction prints
- Class projects
- Tests over terminology/methods
- Integration of important historical artists/movements
- Critiques, reflections, etc.
